My name is Thomas D. Burgess (Tom) and I am the owner of Dream Builders of the Florida Keys, Inc. I am a graduate of the University of South Florida with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. My discipline is Management. I built my first custom home in 1986. In the early 1990’s I realized there was a significant opportunity in the Florida Keys. The Florida Keys run approximately 120 miles long, yet all fall within one county, Monroe. Monroe County contains seven (7) different jurisdictional building departments each with it’s own idiosyncrasies resulting in a building permitting process that was, and still is, quite complicated and lengthy. It is not for the faint of heart and definitely not for amateurs.

The governmental agencies at the Federal, State, and Local level discouraged continued development in the Keys creating a lucrative window for those who are able to navigate the process.Since this time I have lead the residential building industry by permitting and building over 30 custom homes ranging in price from $1M to over $4M. I bring over 20 years of expertise. I have experience in all of the permit jurisdictions. I am a considered an expert in the permitting process. Over the years I have developed relationships with the staff at the governmental agencies and building departments who keep me informed on the ever changing pulse of the industry in Monroe County. These relationships allow me the ability to easily adapt to the newest regulatory stumbling blocks placed in the permitting maze. I leave nothing to chance.

My work force for the most part is brought in from other parts of the state reducing the staggering labor costs and eliminating the syndrome called “Keys Disease”. While the majority of builders in the Florida Keys take from 18 to 24 months to build homes of my caliber and size. I complete my projects in approximately 12 months. I do all this without compromising quality.

In 2008 I was awarded the coveted “Builder of the Year Award”. The ingredients of a successful project are “QUALITY, VALUE, and TIMELINESS”. I will never lose my focus. I treat every client as if they are my only client. This puts my clients in their dream home quicker resulting in a major reduction of carrying costs.
